Although the back is most 'touchable' behind us, it has a front, back, left and right. It also gets a stable base from a neutral and well balanced pelvis, and has strong links with the rest of the spine. As such treating a back should involve looking at the whole body, especially if the back problem has been persistent or long term. In our opinion, the commonly made mistake in treating back pain is ignoring the way it functions in the whole body.
At Body Matters Physio, we look at how the spine moves, it's posture, how it relates to surrounding areas such as the pelvis and then work with hands-on techniques to unload the pressure on the back, helping your back move better, feel freer and ease pain.
Each case is different, some back pain is aggravated by treatments, positions or activities that another person's back pain will absolutely love, so your physio needs to thoroughly assess then choose the right treatment option for you.
Commonly at Body Matters Physio, treatment starts with biomechanical analysis (how is your body moving in each area and as a unit), then improving the bio mechanics to ease your back pain.
We utilise techniques such as Strain Counterstrain, Dry Needling, Muscle Energy Techniques, as well as some spinal mobilisation and massage to improve the function of areas leading to back pain.
Exercise prescription is valuable for people with back pain. Your physio will choose one or two specific exercises that will help your specific problem. When you're injured with your back, if trying exercises, remember to do gentle, non-straining exercises that don't leave you in much pain.
