Headaches can really weight you down. People can have difficulty concentrating, sleeping or may be in a bad mood due to headaches, making work and relationships challenging.
We all wish there was a quick and easy answer for headache management but the reality is there can be many sources of headache. If they are ongoing or worsening you may consider seeing a Doctor to check any potential health issues that may be responsibe, or getting your eyes checked.
Check that you are drinking enough water, and perhaps consider your sleep patterns, and start elimination some potentially irritating dietary factors such as stimulants and sugars. If trying some lifestyle changes or dietary changes, remember to change only one thing at once so you know what factor is responsible if you do notice the headaches improve.
At Body Matters Physio, you will be assessed from head to toe. Movement limitations, postural imbalances and stiff joints, especially in the upper neck will be treated. Specifically the upper neck is often involved, and hands-on treatment, exercise prescription, postural improvement, activity modification advice and dry needling are often very helpful to headache sufferers.
Strain counterstrain, joint mobilisation, dry needling, or a very gentle but powerful style of treatment called craniosacral treatment are often really helpful for headaches and you can read more about these techniques on this website as they are all methods utilised at Body Matters Physio.
If you think your neck might be contributing to your headaches, a simple exercise where you put your hand on the side of your head, then use your neck muscles to push the head into the hand, while the hand blocks the head movement is often a nice 'loosening up' technique for the neck muscles. Try holding 15 seconds left, right, front and back a few times a day. Remember to stop and get properly examined if this worsens your symptoms.
