The most commonly seen elbow complaints here at Body Matters Physio are Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis) or Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis). These are both conditions that involve small, repetitive irritations or strains at the areas where your forearm/hand muscles attach to your elbow.
These injuries are often something that start slowly and be a bit annoying, but can severely limit your function.
The pain from these conditions is typically on the inside or outside muscles at the elbow. Pain can be with repetitive tasks, lifting, typing, or tasks such as turning keys or opening doors.
Treatment in conjunction with individualised management techniques can drastically speed up recovery. Treatment may involve soft tissue release such as Strain Counterstrain, Dry Needling, exercise prescription and, in some case, the use of an appropriate brace depending on your elbow pain presentation.
These conditions also benefit a great deal from you doing some homework. Common homework for elbow pain includes stretching of the forearm (see below). Stretch for 30 seconds or longer and repeat twice. The stretch should be static and can be repeated regularly throughout the day. This should not cause any significant pain.
